TIPS TO REDUCE SALT USE

1/23/2018

Help protect our aquatic resources this winter!

De-icing salt pollutes our lakes, creeks, and wetlands. When salt melts snow and ice it
dissolves in to the water and cannot be removed. As it accumulates in our soil and water bodies it becomes more and more harmful to plants, aquatic life, and infrastructure. You can prevent further salt pollution by using the recommendations below.

These efforts were also recently featured in the Southwest Journal! Read the article on SWJ's website to get more information about how we're working to distribute these resources to businesses.

Hello Joe,

.Thanks for taking action. The sidewalk salt issue has been on my mine for years and also recently as I visited Wells Fargo and Frattilone's Ace Hdwe.

.I asked to see a manager at both places, pointed out the great amount of residual salt, reminding them we are killing our city lakes with salt according to a STRIB article last fall. They were informed about the issue and seemed concerned.

.I suggested sweeping up the salt and reusing next year.

.Subsequent visits found no action taken at these locations.

.We are dealing with buttheads here.

.Years ago when I pointed out to a guy on Lake Street who was applying large amounts of salt with a little machine how it was like walking on gravel, his reply was that the more salt he put down the more money he made.

.I will remind managers at these location again. Now that I know there is an organized effort. I am less discouraged.

.Please let me know what else I can do. I work evenings and cannot be at meetings.

.I use very little salt on my public or private sidewalk and if possible sweep it up afterwards.

22 y/o woman here. I fell pretty hard on 26th st this winter because there wasn’t enough ice melt. I hit my head. I ended up going to the hospital for it. This almost makes me upset.
