About Community Meal

What do you eat?
The meal itself is healthy and really tasty, always with a veg option. First time, just come and enjoy.  If you want after that, you can sign up to play a part in an upcoming meal. People often sign up to cook a pot of soup or two, bake a loaf of bread, make a salad.

Is it a soup kitchen or potluck?
Not a soup kitchen, not a potluck. Dessert has naturally become potluck-style. People bring cupcakes, cookies, cakes.

So is it really free?
This meal is about people coming together – we want zero barrier to entry. We run on the donations of those who believe in the idea and want to keep it going. So we have a Square and donation basket at each meal. We purposely make no suggested donation though – give nothing or give what you can this week. We want this meal to continue only if people want it to and no longer, so that everyone knows it exists because the community wants it to. (We're working on getting a donation link set up online as well.)
What happens there?
Right now the meal is... just a meal! Around a couple of long supper tables, music on the speakers. People bring desserts, people sign up to cook the next meal, people just show up after work or whatever their day was. Age range of people who have come: kids to teens to 20s and 30s, 40s and 50s and beyond. And then some people stick around to help run dishes in the Springhouse kitchen afterward. We'd love to have someone bring a guitar sometime, or flowers... we're open to it growing and evolving.

How did this start?
Community Meal started the Tuesday after the 2018 mid-term election. The idea was: create a regular place for neighbors to come together and connect. Winter is a daunting time to start anything, so we're grateful for the dozens of people who are already turning out. The long-term vision of the supper is that it will truly be for everyone – this will mean more targeted outreach then we are doing today.

Last question... is this a religious thing, associated with the church?
No. Springhouse Ministry Center has been an amazing partner so far, thoughtfully and intentionally staying out of our way as we seek to let this supper build as a neighborhood-oriented activity. It's in the mission of Springhouse to be an open resource to the community, and they're actively living that mission with us and many other non-religious community groups. Springhouse's Story
