As the City of Minneapolis finishes up their fall street clean up, the LHENA Environmental Committee is organizing a leaf clean up to prevent all the remaining leaves and other debris from flowing into our lakes, creeks and rivers and fertilizing the algae blooms and weed growth next summer. The first leaf clean up is this Sunday, Nov. 14th from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Mueller Park! Volunteers will collect and bag the leaves in the street around the entire block of Mueller Park on both sides of the street. If possible, please park your car elsewhere for these two hours. The leaf clean up will be weather dependent and postponed if too much rain or snow makes bagging leaves too difficult and heavy. All volunteers are welcome!
What else can you do to protect our lakes and rivers? Organize your block or street for a leaf clean up. The LHENA Environmental Committee will help you! Next week is the last week for yard waste. If you still have leaves that need to be collected after the 19th, call 311 and request a special leaf pick up. For more info, contact Joe Knaeble at 612-644-9412, joe.knaeble@usinternet.com or Mariah Weitzenkamp at 507-319-1699. The LHENA Board of Directors will have its monthly meeting on Wednesday, November 17, 6:30pm - 8:30pm via Zoom. The public is welcome to attend. The agenda includes:

Over a hundred kids and their families headed to Mueller Park this past Saturday for fun on a glorious late fall day. It was our 2nd annual Halloween Scavenger Hunt organized by Jen Wilson and her daughter Sachi. Upon arrival at the park, young witches, ghosts and goblins grabbed their maps and zipped around the park to find eight spooky items. After completing the map they came back to a gift bag stuffed full of treats and small toys donated by our sponsors.
Our plaza was also buzzing on Saturday. Snapology located on Lyndale and 27th had an activity table to show us amazing things one can do with Legos. There was also treats and hot cider thanks to LHENA and the neighborhood baking team. Plus we sampled egg burritos from a new neighborhood food concept, The Rolling Egg, owned by Liz Carpenter. Many thanks to the local businesses who helped sponsor the treat bags: Another big thank you to the local businesses who sponsored this event and contributed to goodie bags for kiddos: TrueGrit Society, Café Meow, Lake & Bryant Café, On-Site Public Media, Lyn-Lake Chiropractic, Fit1st Running, and Snapology. LHENA is collaborating with HUE-MAN Partnership and the University of Minnesota School of Nursing in conducting a community-wide survey to self-identify health strengths, challenges, and needs of the Wedge neighborhood. LHENA will receive survey data to help facilitate positive change in our neighborhood to make it better and healthier for all. Survey results will also help the organization set a foundation for its strategic planning process for 2022 and beyond.
If you are a resident of the Wedge neighborhood, you can take the community survey. It will take roughly 20 minutes to complete. A $10 gift card will be given to each participant when they complete the survey. A code generated at the end of the study should be sent to Clarence Jones at clarencejones@gmail.com, and a gift card will be sent. Survey results are confidential and only identifiable by zip code. The community survey findings will be presented to our neighborhood by the University of Minnesota in January 2022. Take the community health survey. |
