Notice of Board Vote

6/28/2021

At the July 21st LHENA Board meeting, the LHENA Board of Directors will be voting whether or not to shift $8,126 in remaining funds from the organization's Neighborhood Revitalization Program (NRP) "Explore Historic District" contract into LHENA's "Youth Arts Programming" NRP contract. Shifting funds into the Youth Arts Programming contract aligns with the LHENA strategic plan and has been recommended by LHENA's executive committee.

Any questions and/or input can be sent to paul@thewedge.org.

Restaurant Spotlight: The Lowry

6/16/2021

Picture
Our Spotlight restaurant this week is The Lowry, located at 2112 Hennepin Avenue South. The Lowry opened in 2011 and is part of the Blue Plate Restaurant Company. The Blue Plate Group operates several other restaurants in Minneapolis and Saint Paul that you may be familiar with, including the Longfellow Grill, the Edina Grill, the Groveland Tap, the Highland Grill, and the Freehouse, in addition to the Lowry. The Freehouse, located in the North Loop, is also a brew pub which supplies beers to their other restaurants, including The Lowry. You can get several styles of Freehouse beer at the Lowry in addition to a good selection of other craft brews and a nice selection of various whiskeys.

The name reflects their location in the historic Lowry Hill district of Minneapolis. Prior to becoming the Lowry in 2011, the location housed a Hollywood Video store (remember when you had to rent a videotape or DVD?) and the 2112 Design Center, which sold modern and Scandinavian style furniture.

The Lowry’s tagline is “Burgers, Whiskey, Oysters, and Eggs are what we do best.” They pride themselves on having a full breakfast, lunch, and dinner menu; and all menu items can be ordered at any time. They are one of the few places in the metro area that features fresh oysters on the half-shell.  They attract a diverse clientele, from nurses wrapping up the night shift coming in for breakfast, to business lunches, to the Uptown nightlife crowd, in addition to their neighborhood “regulars.” Assistant General Manager Shannon Heaney notes that the most popular items are the Blue Plate Deluxe burger, the steak and pierogies entree, and the chilaquiles with eggs over easy. Her personal favorites are the steak and pierogies and the Blue Plate Turkey Burger.

Co-owner Stephanie Shimp grew up close to the Wedge neighborhood, and is thrilled about the Restaurant Fan Club, and that the Spotlight is shining on the Lowry this week!

As of early June, they are open for indoor and outdoor dining, as well as take-out and delivery.

Development proposal: 2003 Aldrich Ave S

6/4/2021

Updated on June 10, 2021

On Wednesday, June 9, the LHENA Zoning & Planning Committee heard from Randolph Street Realty Capital regarding a new project proposal at 2003 Aldrich Ave S. This project plan is in the early stages, but the developer will be taking feedback from our community into consideration.

What we know so far:
  • The project consists of 46 units and 11 parking stalls, and is five stories of apartments over lower level parking.
  • Units will be studio and 1-br, ranging from $950 to $1250 per month.
  • Developers are "focused on affordability, less on parking ratio."
  • Developers are requesting a setback variance on the north and east sides.
  • The project is a collaboration between Randolph Street Realty Capital and Collage Architects.

To view the project site plans, see the .pdf file below.
