Fremont Bridge replacementBegan 8/28, requires temporary short reroute.Starting Wednesday, August 28, construction crews began replacement of the century-old Fremont Avenue Bridge. The new bridge will provide a crossing that reflects the original design with updates for people driving, biking, walking and rolling. In addition, crews will complete critical utility work under the Midtown Greenway, including replacing a city water main.
Construction impacts in the area Project leaders are working to minimize construction impacts to the Greenway and in the area as much as possible. Work on the bridge, the Greenway and adjacent side streets will require coordination among the county, city and utilities, and will take two construction seasons to complete. Background: Fremont Avenue BridgeFor safety reasons, Fremont Avenue Bridge closed to motor vehicle traffic in 2016. On August 28, the bridge will also close to people biking, walking and rolling for construction activities. People will continue to have access to Girard and Emerson avenues for crossing over the Greenway. Other Closures: 29th Street and Fremont AvenueTwo nearby roads will also be impacted during construction: 29th Street between Fremont and Emerson avenues will be closed; and Fremont Avenue immediately north and south of the bridge will close intermittently. Be aware that this will affect MetroTransit bus routes, delivery routes to businesses and street parking for residents and nearby businesses. Temporary closure and reroute of the Midtown Greenway The nature, location and complexity of the work to rebuild the aging bridge structures and replace the city watermain crossing underneath the Greenway require a temporary closure at Fremont and short reroute of the Greenway around the construction activities. Weather-permitting, this closure will start August 28 and last approximately 10 weeks. By completing this work this year, the city will be able to minimize the impacts during peak usage times next spring and summer. Signs will be on the Greenway a week prior to the closure to notify users of the upcoming reroute. To improve safety during the reroute, 28th Street will be restriped to accommodate both directions of bike traffic. Additionally, traffic signal timing and signage will be adjusted along the route to minimize delays and help with wayfinding. There will likely be additional shorter-term closures of the Greenway later on during construction to complete activities such as placing the bridge beams, bridge deck and other structural pieces, that will use the same reroute. These closures will be shared ahead of time.
