From the Southwest Journal: Protesters march to stop demolition of cracked affordable apartment.

8/13 UPDATE: Southwest Journal released an article on 8/13 about this story.

8/1 UPDATE: The company that was responsible for the damage of 2003 Aldrich Ave S in October 2018 now happens to be the owner. One of our Wedge residents, an attorney, did some research and relayed the following:

We will continue to keep you informed of any updates as they are made available to us.

7/31/20:

Neighbors,

It has very recently come to our attention that the apartment building at 2003 Aldrich Avenue South has been sold and the new owner is in the process of securing a demolition permit. The board members of the Lowry Hill East Neighborhood Association are keenly aware of the concerns that have circled around this structure since adjacent construction at 2004 Lyndale Avenue South caused significant enough damage to require the evacuation of tenants in October of 2018 (see this article for context).

LHENA submitted a statement on July 30 to city officials requesting an immediate halt to the demolition of this structure as we parse out its viability as an ongoing housing resource for our community. The loss of 25 units of naturally occurring affordable housing in a building that is part of our historic fabric stands against Wedge values of inclusivity. We commit to being advocates for the Wedge as this situation develops.

To that end, we welcome your insight and concerns so that we might best represent the neighborhood. Please fill out this short survey to share your thoughts.

I lived in the Wedge for three years and am saddened to hear about the planned demolition of 2003 Aldrich. If this building is demolished it will make access to housing in the area even more prohibitive.
